MAPFRE GLOBAL RISKS APPOINTS NEW HEAD OF INTERNATIONAL UNDERWRITING

Carlos Vasquez promoted to support continued expansion in London and internationally

MAPFRE GLOBAL RISKS (MGR), the MAPFRE unit that specialises in providing comprehensive insurance solutions for multinationals, today (1 September 2017) announces the appointment of Carlos Vasquez as International Head of Underwriting.

Carlos Vasquez has been promoted from within MGR to lead international underwriting, including the continued expansion in London, the strategic base for international growth of its global risks business, continental Europe and operations in North America and APAC.

Prior to his move to London Carlos Vasquez, who will report to Chris Smith, Chief Regions & Markets Officer – International, was head of Construction and Engineering for MGR based in Madrid. He joined MGR in 2005 and prior to that he worked at Heath Lambert for 6 years.

Carlos Vasquez replaces José Antonio Ruibal who has been promoted to Chief Regions and Market Officer – Latin America.

Commenting on the appointment, Chris Smith said: “Carlos’s move forms part of our strategy to delegate authority from the centre in Madrid to London and international regions where we want to make underwriting decisions closer to the client.

He added: “At MGR we believe in developing talent and promoting from within when possible. Carlos Vasquez is already a highly respected underwriter in his field and he who will use his experience and expertise to support our underwriters across all business lines, as part of our continued growth strategy.”

Carlos Vasquez commented, saying: “Moving from Madrid to London is an exciting move, but one where I am relishing the challenge. I look forward to working with the team in London and across the wider MGR international network in support of our broker partners and clients.”

This move demonstrates MGR’s commitment to London as an international platform for growth, as the business continues its expansion, in the UK and internationally across a wide range of business sectors, with further announcements to be made shortly.
